Destination Highlight: Jamaica, The Heartbeat Of The World
July 23, 2026

The vibrant island of Jamaica is consistently ranked among the best tourist destinations in the world—and we have no questions as to why! SoulVenture Travels’ founder and travel expert, Jody, first traveled to Jamaica back in 2010 and has been back eight times since—after traveling around the globe, it still remains one of her all-time favorite destinations.

So, why should Jamaica be on your bucket list? Let’s break it down for you! Then, once you’ve decided that you just have to go, we’ll let you know where you should stay and what you should know before you go.

Why travel to Jamaica?

Every traveler who has had the pleasure of visiting Jamaica will tell you this: the vibe is unmatched. From the moment you land you’re on island time. The friendly locals will welcome you into their relaxed way of life that includes plenty of time on the white sand beaches, nights drifting away to the sounds of reggae, and meals prepared with bright spices and local produce. You can’t help but be swept away by the magic of the island.

Just a short, easy flight from the United States, Jamaica is perfect for almost any occasion—a romantic getaway, girls trip, or family holiday will all be thoroughly enjoyed here. With the perfect blend of relaxation on the beaches and at the luxury resorts and adventure in the forest, on the rivers, and from the cliffs, Jamaica has something that will keep everyone coming back time and time again.

What should you not miss in Jamaica?

Jody is the perfect person to tell you that you will need to come to Jamaica more than once to experience everything…and even the things you are able to fit into your itinerary you will surely want to do again! So, don’t stress about fitting everything into one trip, just plan your return! With that said, there are some iconic sights and activities all first-timers should have on their radar.

First, of course, are the beaches. Well known for white sand and crystal clear blue waters, the beaches of Jamaica are consistently ranked among the best in the world. Some of the most iconic shores on the island include Seven Mile Beach in Negril, Doctor’s Cave Beach in Montego Bay, and Frenchman’s Cove in Port Antonio. Known to have healing properties, the water flowing onto Jamaican shores in warm and blue year-round, you’ll want to take a dip every chance you get.

After soaking in the sun and sand all day you’re sure to work up an appetite. Jamaican food is full of vibrant spices and fresh, local produce. Visitors shouldn’t miss the opportunity to try jerk chicken, ackee and saltfish, and meat patties, some of the island’s most famous delicacies. Find the most authentic food at roadside and beach stands or try one of the many farm-to-table dining experiences for the freshest ingredients. Wash it all down with some iconic Red Stripe beer or Appleton Estate rum.

Each night as the sun goes down you’ll drift away to the rhythms of the island—from reggae to dancehall to ska, there is always a beat to sway your hips to. Enjoy music at restaurants, bars, and dance halls. The rich culture of Jamaica doesn’t stop with music. Art and history are around every corner. Explore the haunted corridors of Rose Hall Great House, learn about the unforgettable life of Bob Marley at the museum in Kingston, and wander around the iconic haven for pirates at Port Royal.

While most travelers think of relaxing and taking things slow while visiting Jamaica, those seeking an adrenaline rush will be easy to please as well. Hikers can hike through the dark at Blue Mountain Peak Trail to catch a breathtaking sunrise at the summit, animal lovers can take a crocodile safari down the Black River, and divers can jump off the cliffs at Rick’s Cafe. Zip lining, white water rafting, fishing, and climbing through the terraced rapids of Dunn’s River Falls are also can’t-miss experiences adventure lovers will remember for a lifetime.

Where should you stay in Jamaica?

By now, you probably know our answer to this question. After staying with them many times ourselves and partnering with them for years, we would recommend Sandals and Beaches Resorts to anyone visiting Jamaica. Sandals has seven resorts in Jamaica, including Sandals Montego Bay which was named “Caribbean's Leading All-Inclusive Resort” by World Travel Awards in 2025. Beaches Negril is perfect for families of all ages who want to experience the island together and was named “Jamaica’s Leading All-Inclusive Family Resort” by World Travel Awards in 2025.

Each Sandals and Beaches resort is nestled along some of the most famous and beautiful shorelines on the island (and, in our opinion, the world). We choose these resorts time and time again for us and our travelers because they truly redefine what “all-inclusive” means. Pay one up-front price with no surprises. All meals, snacks, fine dining, top-shelf drinks, airport transfers, water sports, greens fees, tips, and gratuities are included, all the time. All you have to do is sit back, relax, and indulge.

Additionally, as nature and animal lovers, we always feel good sending our clients to Sandals and Beaches Resorts, as they continue to give back to the communities they are established in. Through the Sandals Foundation, travelers, employees, and community members have been involved in important work including coral conservation, marine protection, and sea turtle rescue. They also nurture the local animals, participating in initiatives such as feeding, spaying, and neutering stray cats.

What should you know before you travel to Jamaica?

Luckily Jamaica is a very easy country to travel to. With over 4.5 million visitors annually, the tourism infrastructure is well-established. As with any new destination though, there are always some good things to know before you go. Here’s a quick list of the things we think you should keep in mind:

  • Travelers from the U.S. do not need visas, however, along with a valid passport, all travelers must fill out a Passenger Declaration (C5) form which can be completed online up to 30 days before arrival
  • All travelers must have a return or onward ticket booked when entering the country
  • There are three international airports—Sangster International Airport (MBJ) in Montego Bay, Norman Manley International Airport (KIN) in Kingston, and Ian Fleming International Airport (OCJ) in Boscobel (near Ocho Rios)
  • It is a less than five hour flight from both Chicago and MSP to any of the three international airports
  • Jamaica is in the tropics! It is warm year-round with rainy seasons from May to June and September to November and hurricane season June to September
  • The official language of Jamaica is English, but many locals also speak “Patios” (also known as Patwa or Jamaican Creole), an English-based creole language including West African grammatical structures and words borrowed from Spanish, French, Portuguese, and indigenous Taíno
  • Jamaica is in the Eastern time zone and does not observe daylight savings time
  • Cars drive on the left side of the road—be aware of this if you plan to rent a car
  • Water is safe to drink, brush your teeth, and bathe in

After all of that, we know you’re itching to book your unforgettable getaway to Jamaica—the heartbeat of the world. Our team is here to make your dreams become reality! Reach out to us today to get on your way to white sand beaches and relaxed island vibes.
